IoT platforms & cloud software

Software foundations connecting devices with the services around them.

Platform architectureDevice integrationData interfacesApplication foundations

A connected platform gives device information a useful place in a larger system. Its architecture must reflect both the behaviour of the devices and the needs of the applications that depend on them. Orelink’s IoT platform and cloud software focus connects those perspectives.

07.01

Define the platform boundary

A platform can sit between many devices and many application needs. Its responsibilities should therefore be defined carefully: what it receives, what it stores or processes, and what it exposes to other systems.

Device behaviour, connectivity conditions and the expectations of consuming applications all influence the design. A clear boundary reduces ambiguity between platform functionality and the responsibilities of other services.

07.02

Devices and data

Information from devices needs a consistent representation and a clear path through the platform. The relationship between device identity, configuration and application data should be explicit within the architecture.

The choice of data interfaces and communication technologies depends on the product and integration environment. Specific technologies are selected within the technical scope, with attention to the system as a whole.

07.03

Application-facing foundations

Applications need interfaces that reflect their real requirements. The platform should make relevant information and operations understandable without exposing unnecessary implementation detail.

Orelink’s broader software and embedded capabilities support conversations across the device-to-application boundary. Platform work can be scoped alongside device engineering or as a defined software engagement.

07.04

Deployment is a design decision

A cloud-based implementation has operational and deployment considerations as well as application requirements. Those constraints should be part of the architecture and delivery discussion.

Deployment architecture, operational responsibilities, support and software licensing are agreed with the project team. Provider and hosting choices follow the requirements of the product and its operating environment.
